A great photograph is not only determined by the subject, lighting or colors, but even more importantly is the composition of the photo itself. As different compositions of the same scene can potentially communicate a totally different message. A thoughtfully composed photo can also make the subject of interest more dynamic and interesting. I've listed 10 composition tips that will hopefully help you get the shot you want.
- Find a center of interest, normally this would be your subject of interest such as a flower, a person and balance it out with secondary object such as leaves, trees or people in the background.
- Make a shift in perspective, look for non-conventional angles such as shooting from high above, or get a worms eye view from below the subject.
- Consider the positioning of your subjects, try to use secondary objects to lead the viewer's eye to the subject. Be careful not to let the secondary objects take the lime light though.
- Look for layers to add depth of field to the scene. Have something in the foreground, middle ground and background adds depth and interest to the photo and allows the eye to travel from layer to layer.
- Take note of the colors in the scene, look for contrasting colors to really make your subjects pop.
- Make use of light to add dramatic effects to your photos. Light shining through crevices from the ceiling or walls or clouds adds drama and interest to the photo.
- Remember to keep the photo simple, if there are too many distracting objects around you can try using an opening in the wall, door or window to frame and isolate the subject, thus removing all the other distracting elements.
- Try rotating your camera every once in a while, don't always shoot horizontally, sometimes a vertical or skewed angle can serve the photo better.
- Rule of thirds, use it to your benefit and bend it if it serves the shot better.
- Don't just stand in one spot! Walk around until you find the best angle and perspective of a scene.
